Three police officers were killed and at least 15 people got wounded in an apparently premeditated blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The blast occurred as police and firefighters entered the property near the city of Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for three siblings who were older adults.

Each of the three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals got detained at the location and a third person who escaped following the explosion was located not long after. Each of them have been taken to hospital.

The explosion could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and images from the scene revealed the building turned into a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the three family members in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The leader of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, stated the property was under an eviction order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the three owners.

Mediators had been assigned to talk with the siblings who had secured themselves into the house. When the police came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think a family member caused the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno told reporters.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also found at the residence, the minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the explosion comprised an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three officers of the state police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

The official believed the detonation had occurred on a floor above the entrance and stated to journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the incident, he mentioned members had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors informed Italian media, adding that the trio had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto united with other political leaders in commemorating the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
